City of San Francisco

San Francisco is the leading cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California.  The City covers a total area of 46.9 square miles and is home to nearly 840,000 residents.  It’s located on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, about 15 minutes north of San Francisco International Airport and 45 minutes north of Silicon Valley.

San Francisco, also known as the City by the Bay, is a one-of-a-kind metropolis.  The City takes pride in its unparalleled attractions, renowned museums, and the treasured neighborhoods that define it.  From the breathtaking Golden Gate Bridge to its exquisite art galleries, San Francisco is a popular tourist destination known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, and unmistakable landmarks -- the Golden Gate Bridge, Sutro Tower, the Palace of Fine Arts, cable cars, Alcatraz, and Chinatown.

San Francisco is distinguished by its diverse architecture and distinctive neighborhoods.  New skyscrapers, live-work lofts, and condominiums sit side by side with architecturally impressive churches and buildings.  Many communities feature a mix of businesses, restaurants, and venues that cater to local residents, visitors, and tourists.  Several neighborhoods are dotted with boutiques, cafes, and nightlife, including Union Street in Cow Hollow, 24th Street in Noe Valley, Valencia Street in the Mission, Grant Avenue in North Beach, and Irving Street in the Inner Sunset.  Expansive Golden Gate Park presents a peaceful retreat from the City’s busy pace.  Cultural experiences abound, with live theatre, concerts, symphony, and ballet exemplifying just a few of the City’s sophisticated experiences.

In terms of education, the San Francisco Unified School District runs the public schools, with the State Board of Education overseeing some charter schools. Students attend schools based on assignment rather than neighborhood proximity.   Just under 30% of the city's school-age children attend one of San Francisco's more than 100 private or parochial schools, compared to a 10% rate nationwide.   Notable colleges and universities include the University of San Francisco, UCSF, San Francisco State, Hastings College of Law, and the Academy of Art.

A highly educated city, San Francisco is also the headquarters of five major banking institutions and other companies such as Levi Strauss & Co., Gap Inc.,, Dropbox, Yelp, Pinterest, Twitter, Uber, and Craigslist.

There’s something for everyone in San Francisco.  The opportunities are infinite, and the setting is unparalleled.  There’s also plenty of public transportation to take you wherever you need to go!
