10 Ways to Keep Your Home Cooler this Summer

Pam Dela Cruz • August 4, 2023

We all love summer, but how many of us love the heat that comes with it? And as a result of the gradual but certain effects of global warming, summers will only get hotter. Here are a few ways to stay cool without cranking up the AC.

Keep More Houseplants

Apart from being natural air purifiers, houseplants can also provide a cooling effect – especially if you place them near windows where they can absorb the sunlight.

Plant a Tree or Shrub

This is a much bigger investment than simply buying small houseplants. But if you’re a homeowner, having a tree outside your home can help to keep the inside cool. That’s because trees can provide shade, block solar radiation and help to lower the temperature.

Do Some of your Chores at Night

Appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and especially clothes dryers all put out heat when they’re in use. While you can’t stop washing clothes and doing the dishes, you can wait and do these chores in the evening when it’s cooler out. If you have the option, hang your clothes outside to dry.

Cook Outdoors

One of the perks of summer living is that you get to cook outdoors. And doing so can keep your kitchen and home from getting too hot.

Switch your Sheets

Keep your bed linen light colored, breathable, and airy with materials like linen or cotton. They promote ventilation and airflow in the room. They can also be used to liven up a room with a refreshing change of sheets.

Be Strategic with Doors and Windows

Keep the doors of unused rooms closed. This helps to keep cool air in the rooms you’re actually using. However, during the evening hours, it’s good to keep doors open – especially if it encourages breezes to flow throughout the house, cooling it down naturally.

The same goes for windows you can open windows when it’s cool and keep them closed when it gets warmer. The temperature outside is reduced in the evening and so the best time to open the windows is early morning or late evening.

Also, keeping your curtains closed will help to filter the sun. invest in thick materials to keep your rooms cool. This is especially important if you have windows facing the south and west, which get the most sun.

Turn the Lights Off

Another way you can cool down your house is by turning off the lights when they are not being used. Incandescent lightbulbs tend to emit a lot of heat so by turning them off or switching to fluorescent lamps you’ll not only lower the temperature, but you also lower your electricity bill.

Cool Down with Cool Hues

The best time to decide on a seasonal update that will last all year is during the summer. Think about painting your walls with light colors like sky blue, pastel yellow, aqua, or beige that reflect heat and light rather than absorbing it. These will support the interior's cooling efforts and will give your house a new, fresh appearance. Light colors also give your home a brighter interior.

Get Creative with Your Fan

Your fan is a must when it comes to keeping cool in the summer. Fans help to circulate air and make you cooler. The issue with fans is that if the temperature indoors is too hot the fan may just circulate the hot air which definitely makes you hotter.

  • You can create a cross-breeze by positioning a fan across from a window. This will allow the wind from outside and the air from the fan to combine.
  • If you place a bowl of ice or two frozen water bottles in front of a fan the air from the fan will feel cooler as the ice melts. This usually works best with a table fan and is perfect if you are cooking or doing work at a desk.
  • By turning your box fan outwards by a window, the hot air can be pushed out.
  • Adjusting ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise allows cool air to be pushed downwards. The cooling effect occurs when the air evaporates sweat.

Invest in Portable Air Coolers

A portable air-cooling unit is a great solution for cooling the most used areas of your home. They can easily be moved from one room to another.

For more than twenty-two years, it has been one of the greatest honors of my life to guide hundreds of clients through their real estate journeys. Each family, individual, or estate I have served, each transition I have helped steward, has reminded me that real estate is not just about houses, it is about lives, stories, milestones, and the places we call home. To be trusted during such meaningful moments is a privilege I will never take for granted. Recently, I have taken time to reflect on the chapters of my own life. Inspired by the book "The Five Types of Wealth" and by precious time with my family, I recognized the importance of aligning my professional work with the season of life I am in now. This reflection has led me to a deliberate and exciting transition—one that honors my family priorities, strengthens our ability to serve clients, and creates a foundation for the future. What This Means for You First and foremost, I want to reassure every client, partner, and friend reading this: I am not going anywhere . I remain here for you, deeply engaged in the work I love most - providing guidance, strategy, and thoughtful counsel throughout your real estate journey. What is changing is how our team is structured to serve you more efficiently. I am evolving my role to focus on client relationships and strategic direction, while stepping back from some of the day-to-day operational tasks. This allows me to dedicate time to co-leading the Keller Williams Luxury Division internationally, building educational programs that raise real estate standards across the industry, and pursuing projects that create meaningful impact for my colleagues and my family. Introducing Meridian Partners This new season also means the evolution of our real estate team into Meridian Partners, led by my trusted partner, Rob DeContreras. Many of you already know Rob well. Before joining our team two years ago, Rob was a nationally ranked top-performing private mortgage lender with a reputation for integrity, strategy, and client service. His transition into real estate was a natural extension of his skills and passion for helping people through some of life's biggest financial and personal decisions. Since then, Rob has been side by side with me in guiding clients, handling transactions, all with the trust of our community. Rob is more than a partner as he is someone I trust implicitly. He embodies the same values of excellence, diligence, and care that have always been at the heart of our work. Rob will now lead Meridian Partners in client development, service, and day-to-day transaction management, while I remain deeply engaged in oversight, strategy, and guidance. Together, we bring you over four decades of combined experience, a seamless approach to service, and a shared commitment to doing what is right. For you, this transition means the same high level of care, trust, and excellence you have always experienced—now with two industry leaders guiding you. Why "Meridian"? When choosing a name for this new chapter, we wanted something that captured the spirit of who we are and what we do. Meridian represents balance and connection - an invisible but essential line that brings orientation and clarity. Just as meridians have guided travelers across the globe, Meridian Partners reflects our role in helping clients navigate the complex, often emotional journey of buying or selling a home. It is a name that speaks to constancy, direction, and trust. Partners underscores what has always set our work apart: the belief that real estate is not a transaction, but a relationship. We stand with our clients, allied professionals, and community as true partners in every sense of the word. Looking Ahead As I step into this new chapter, I do so with gratitude. Gratitude for the hundreds of clients who have trusted me, for the extraordinary team members and professionals who have collaborated with us along the way, and for the chance to shape the next generation of our business. With Rob leading Meridian Partners, I am confident that we are positioned to continue the legacy we have built and create a new one. This is not an ending; rather, it is a thoughtful evolution. If you would like to connect with me directly, I welcome your call or message. You can also learn more about Rob and explore the vision of our new team at MeridianPartnersRE.com . We are in full operation, just under a new name, and we look forward to working with you! All My Best, Caroline

There’s something changing in the way people design and live in their homes. It’s not about what’s new or what’s next. It’s about what lasts. What feels good. What reflects a life well lived, not just a life well styled. We’re seeing this everywhere, from Bay Area living rooms to new development kitchens and thoughtfully renovated retreats. The shift is clear: people are moving away from flashy finishes and overly staged spaces, and leaning into what’s now being called Quiet Luxury. But here’s the thing—it’s not really about luxury at all. Not in the traditional sense. It’s about living with intention. Choosing pieces that feel personal. Prioritizing warmth, texture, and quality over quantity or trend.

Why a Second Home Deserves Your Consideration. In today’s uncertain financial environment, many are questioning their path toward retirement. According to Intuit, nearly 70% of people say planning for the future feels tougher, and 68% aren’t sure they’ll ever be able to retire comfortably. That’s why a growing number of homeowners are exploring real estate, not just as a place to live, but as a cornerstone of long-term financial security.

More inventory was bringing balance to our usually fast moving market; or at least, it would have. Instead of steady sales activity, we’re now seeing a pattern of sellers who are stepping back. In fact, San Mateo County just recorded its highest rate of listing cancellations this year. Homes are being pulled off the market, just as summer inventory was gaining momentum. So what’s driving the cancellations, and what does it mean for both buyers and sellers trying to read the market in real time?

Why real estate still needs real people—no matter how smart the algorithm gets The rise of AI is reshaping everything—from how we write to how we search to how we buy. In real estate, companies like Opendoor, Redfin, and Zillow are actively embracing automation, launching tools that promise smarter valuations and more “data-driven” decisions. But here’s the truth: AI can enhance the process, but it can’t replace people. Especially not when it comes to one of the most emotionally nuanced, fast-moving, high-stakes assets most people will ever own.
